7 TIPS TO WIN YOUR FIRST MATCH

Capital Combat is easy to pick up and surprisingly deep once you dig in. If you're mashing buttons and losing rounds, these seven fundamentals will turn things around in a single sitting.

1. Stop mashing — start spacing

The fastest way to improve is to stop pressing buttons randomly. Most rounds are won by spacing: standing just outside your opponent's reach, then stepping in the moment they swing and miss. Hover at the edge of your range and let them come to you.

2. Block by holding back

There's no block button — you guard by holding away from your opponent. Blocked hits do a fraction of the damage and barely push you, so against an aggressive player, a simple held guard flips a losing exchange into a safe one. When in doubt, block.

3. Punch up close, kick from range

Punches are fast but short; kicks are slower but reach further. Use punches when you're nose-to-nose and kicks to poke from a step away. Knowing which button fits which distance is half the game.

4. Respect the special meter

Your special move is powerful but sits on a cooldown shown under your health bar. Don't throw it on cooldown for no reason — a whiffed special leaves you wide open. Save it to punish a blocked attack or to catch a jumping opponent.

5. Bait, then punish

Against the CPU or a button-happy human, deliberately step just out of range to bait a whiff. The instant their attack misses, dash in and land your biggest hit. Patience beats aggression more often than you'd think.

6. Play the clock

You don't have to knock anyone out. If you're ahead on health when the 60-second timer expires, you win the round. So when you've got a life lead late, switch to keep-away — block, retreat, and run out the clock.

7. Pick a fighter that fits you
